René Jacobs, an internationally celebrated expert in historically informed performance practice. Together with the Dresden Music Festival’s own orchestra, Dresdner Festspielorchester he presents Brahms’ »Deutsches Requiem« at the Kulturpalast (June 10, Dresden) and Konzerthaus (June 11, Berlin), dedicating himself to the original sound of the romantic repertoire. The work is one of the most important pieces in the choral canon. Its personal selection of texts and compositional density were already praised by Clara Schumann: »The profound seriousness, combined with the enchantment of the poetry, has a wonderful, harrowing and consoling effect.« The audience may look forward to a moving performance of this outstanding work on historical instruments.

Beethoven 2020 | Series ORIGINAL SOUND
This concert’s program unites the two core themes of the 2020 Festival. Taking up the motto »Inspiration Nature«, the musicians celebrate Beethoven’s 250th anniversary with the performance of two ground-breaking symphonic works: the famous »Symphony of Fate«, whose sound has been circling the earth in space as a golden record since 1977, and the »Pastoral«, in which Beethoven set to music the feelings stirred by experiences in nature. Thus, the Dresden Music Festival continues its artistic statement as part of the »Beethoven Pastoral Project« initiated by the Beethoven Anniversary Society and the United Nations, which calls for multi-faceted exploration and debate of Beethoven’s Sixth as its point of departure – an initiative which culminates in the »Pastoral Day« on this World Environment Day.

Beethoven 2020 | Series ORIGINAL SOUND
This workshop concert aims to demonstrate the inspiring effect of nature upon creative processes. As an introduction to the concert the following evening, it explores the multi-faceted sound portraits of our surroundings, taking Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony as an example. This programme is the Dresden Music Festival’s contribution to the »Beethoven Pastoral Project« initiated by the Beethoven Anniversary Society and the UN Climate Change Secretariat, which invites artists from all over the world to explore the interrelations between mankind and nature, using Beethoven’s »Pastoral« as a model. What Beethoven’s Sixth has to say to us on this subject will be illuminated by the Dresden Festival Orchestra playing original instruments and Ivor Bolton in this moderated concert.
