‘See the music, hear the dance’. These winged words by George Balanchine, the greatest choreographer of the twentieth century, are masterfully expressed in Balanchine / Van Manen / Arqués. Three leading chorographers from different generations show how they make music ‘visible’, as it were. Alongside well-known masterpieces by Balanchine and Hans van Manen, this special touring programme includes a recent creation by the successful young choreographer Juanjo Arqués.

Sir Peter Wright’s The Sleeping Beauty has been the jewel in the crown of Dutch National Ballet’s repertoire for over forty years. This season, the company is awakening the glittering Sleeping Beauty with a kiss no fewer than 21 times, in the period from mid-October to the beginning of January. The demanding variations, brilliant pointe work and pure classical technique make this nineteenth-century fairy-tale ballet the ultimate touchstone for ballet dancers all over the world today.

Johannes Brahms – Tragische Ouverture (1880), only at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg
Anton Bruckner – Symphonie Nr. 7 in E Dur WAB. 107 (1881-83)

Conductor Pablo Heras-Casado and Anima Eterna will join forces to take on a dazzling challenge. Bruckner’s symphonies are so impressive that they have achieved monumental status today as  ‘cathedrals of sound.’ And Heras-Casado and Anima Eterna plan to dismantle those cathedrals—brick by brick—to re-construct them in an entirely new way.

HANS VAN MANEN 90

On 11 July 2022, the grand master of Dutch dance, Hans van Manen, will turn ninety. Dutch National Ballet is celebrating the occasion lavishly with a Van Manen Festival  and with a tour throughout the Netherlands, in which the company will present three gems from Van Manen’s extensive oeuvre.
